Auroras of Hope: Illuminating the Tropical Cuban Night.
The Havana Cathedral, Cuba on Feb 28, 2025
On February 28, 2025, a media mapping of ‘Aurora Borealis in Canada’ illuminated the Baroque facade of the Havana Cathedral as the grand finale of the 15th Havana Biennial.
Amidst the hardships of economic sanctions and prolonged power outages, this project offered the Cuban people a message of resilience through a symphony of light.
By projecting a visual illusion of the Aurora—a phenomenon naturally unseen in the tropics—the installation transformed the sacred historical site into a radiant, ethereal vision of renewal. This evocative reimagining of the cathedral’s enduring presence transcends the traditional landscape, inviting a profound dialogue on hope and the transformative power of artistic wonder .
Established in 1984, the Havana Biennial is a prestigious art exhibition that focuses on artists from the Global South (Latin America, Africa, and Asia). It is significant for prioritizing social and political discourse over commercial interests, transforming the city of Havana into an open laboratory for contemporary artistic experimentation.
